Taking the Step

James 2:24-26

Verse 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

We have been talking about how our faith is reflected in our actions, and we take one more day to examine what that means for our lives.

We often think that the only way to show our faith by deeds is doing something for others. And while this is one way, we have been learning that there are other ways as well. For Abraham it was obeying on multiple occasions even when he had no idea what would happen. For Rahab it was declaring Him to be God and wanting to help the spies carry out His will. But do we face anything that could even compare with their lives?

We will likely not be asked to do some of the extreme things that Abraham was. And even if we are asked to move far away, we have the convenience of being able to hit a few buttons to look up or maybe just ask our phones about the location and we will know more than we ever wanted to know about a certain location. But this doesn’t require the same amount of faith, does it? We can prepare in ways that Abraham couldn’t. We would be able to pack for the journey and mentally prepare ourselves for the difference in culture. But Abraham went by faith.

Rahab was taking a step of faith that would change the direction of her live dramatically. To declare her faith in God and desire to be rescued by these spies she was saying that she was leaving behind everything other than her family. She was walking away from the gods, occupation, culture and the city she had been living in. She was stepping into a strange new world of worshiping the one true God. That in and of itself would have been a big change as she learned God’s law and desires of His people. But she was also going from living in a house in a fortified city to living in a tent. She was also leaving a lucrative occupation and would be learning to live the life of a godly woman. So many changes but she took the steps in full faith with no regrets.

Taking steps of faith with God may not lead us to a more comfortable place. It may be something that we never would have chosen to do but He will always be faithful and His ways are always best. The ultimate show of our faith is that we are taking the action. If we aren’t obeying, we show a lack of faith. No acting faith, no spiritual life.

Making It Personal

What is a step that God has asked you to take? Did it cause you to change something about your life? What step didn’t you take that you wish you had taken?

Making It Personal Kids

Is it scary to walk when you can’t see where you are going? Is it scary following Jesus when you don’t know where He wants you to go? How can you know He wants you to do something?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for wanting to lead us. Help us to be so surrendered to You that we follow without question. In Jesus’ name, amen.
