Show Me Your Faith
Verse 18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.
We have been talking about the importance of our deeds showing our faith but does that mean everyone with deeds show that they have faith?
We all know the kind, a person that is full of good deeds but verbally deny Christ. We may also know those who think that they need to work for their salvation but don’t have any real understanding of who Jesus is and what He came to do. These thoughts are not new to our age but have been around since the beginning of the Church. The question comes of how we fall into this narrative.
Does it only matter that we say we believe in God? What about the demons, don’t they also believe in God? Of course it isn’t enough just to believe in Him. Merely believing leaves out the Lordship of our faith. We don’t obey God and His law because we are trying to appease Him, it is because we have surrendered to Him. For those who don’t see Him as Lord of their life they can either ignore Him or try to work their way into His favor by trying to be good people.
This is the reason being surrendered to His Lordship is so important. Only when we see Him as the Lord of our lives will we understand the way faith spurs us on to doing things for Him. When faith and deeds are entwined it is because we see that it is about magnifying Him and who He is. When we think we have to work to appease God it shows that we think that our salvation depends on us. If it were to depend on us we would never be good enough and would show that we don’t really believe in Him but rather in ourselves.
We don’t want to fall in the category that the demons are in, believing who God is but not doing anything that proves that it is more than knowledge. That’s the key, isn’t it? Our living a life of deeds done for the Lord, in the joy He gives in obedience, results in a relationship that points to Him and our faith in Him. We need to live a life that magnifies who He is and we can only do that if we know Him.
