Mighty Protector!

Psalm 145

Verse 20 The Lord watches over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy.

For the last couple of days we have talked about how we can call on the Lord in any situation and that He will be near and save us. His care is due to His character and His love for us.

David knew from experience the way the Lord watches over those He loves. David had known the fear of large animals coming after the sheep that he was tending but he also knew the strength that came from standing with the Lord against a giant of a man. That strength came from knowing that he was fighting God’s battle. David knew he was bringing glory to God’s name.

David was not saying that we will never feel pain or get hurt. He didn’t buy into the idea that being God’s man meant that no matter what he did, he wouldn’t have to worry about the outcome. David also knew that it wasn’t about living in a way that put himself in danger to prove God would help him. No, David knew understood that was actually mocking God and His grace.

David knew the love of the Lord in a way that few did or do. This is evidenced by the songs that David penned. He speaks of God’s greatness, His wonder, His correction and wrath. David didn’t just know about God, he knew Him personally. He had enjoyed hours of time with the Lord while watching the sheep, he had known the strength of God through the way He directed the stone from his sling, and he had seen God’s protection as his enemy pursued him, but most importantly he had seen God for who He is.

David knew God’s forgiveness and welcomed His correction. Okay, maybe David didn’t accept the conviction right away. He even tried to ignore it but the Spirit wouldn’t let him and David didn’t hold it against the Lord. Instead he came to appreciate the loving way that the Lord brought him to a point of obedience. This brought David comfort because he knew that God will destroy all the evil people. This should bring us comfort too.

Making It Personal

When have you experienced the Lord’s protection? What did that experience teach you about the Lord? What about that experience can you praise Him for today?

Making It Personal Kids

When has Jesus protected you from something? What did you learn about Jesus from that experience? How can you praise Him for saving you?

Closing Prayer

Father, You are a mighty protector. We praise You for the ways You have worked in our lives. Give us the wisdom to walk in Your ways and look for Your almighty hand in every detail of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
