Light and Shadows

James 1:16-18

Verse 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

Yesterday we talked about how God alone is the giver of good and perfect gifts. While this is a perfectly pleasant part of His character, James points out yet another that we need to hold onto - His unchanging nature.

We may have heard how God is the same yesterday, today and forever but how often do we meditate on the fact that He is unchanging? Why is knowing about His unchangeable character important? It is in understanding His unchangeable nature that we can see His complete faithfulness. It is the knowledge of His faithfulness that should bolster our faith in Him.

Our key verse today calls God the Father of heavenly lights who doesn't cast moving shadows. God is a steady light for our life. Because He is steady we don't have to worry about Him changing His mind all the time causing us to wonder what He desires of us. With such a steady light we have no excuse for wandering in darkness.

But remember this point of His being the Father of heavenly light is being made about His giving of good and perfect gifts. It is important for us to remember that these gifts are good and perfect because He doesn’t change. His gifts are not merely given for the temporal life, though they may be a blessing in this life. Our God is not short-sighted and true to His character He gives what will benefit us the most and that will never be just for the life we live here on earth.

What if one of the gifts we can give the Great Gift Giver is ourselves and living as He designed us to live? What if we reflected Him by not thinking only of this life but rather the eternal? If we saw His gifts as more than just benefits for us and looked for the way that we can bring God glory through them we would find that His light would be shining through us and drawing others to Him. His faithfulness and stability should be quite obvious in our life. He never changes but we need to be changing daily to be more like Him.

Making It Personal

How does His being unchanging encourage you in life? What are ways that you should be reflecting His light but aren’t? In what ways are you reflecting Him?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to be steady? How can you reflect Jesus? How does reflecting Jesus affect those around you?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for being stable in a world that is like shifting sand. Give us a desire to live lives that reflect You to those around us so that we can bring You glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
