The Best Gifts

James 1:16-18

Verse 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

We have been talking about the lies that we are tempted by and believe. We said that one of the lies the enemy uses is to tell us that God doesn’t want good things for us.

James has pointed out the negative side of lies but follows it up with the truth. He reminds his readers that while the enemy would like us to think that God is withholding the good from us, the opposite is actually true. It is so important for us to remember God’s character so that we don’t doubt what He wants for us. God loves us and so we know that He wouldn’t withhold anything that would be for our benefit and His glory.

The issue that makes temptation so tempting is that we want what we think is better for us, disregarding God’s ultimate plan. God has a plan and He isn’t into ordinary. He has been planning the best for us since before we were born. Since we know that He has our best interest at heart, why would we ever doubt Him?

We have talked about how God is faithful in His providing our needs but we also need to take note in our key verse today that He provides gifts, good and perfect gifts. Not only does the verse say that He gives good gifts but it says that EVERY good and perfect gift comes from God. James not only tells us that temptations are built on doubting God, He makes the crucial point that every good gift comes from God.

How often do we think about the fact that every time something that is good for us comes into our lives it is from God? Notice we said, “…that is good for us.” This doesn’t mean that we will always like the gift that comes our way as sometimes they may come as trials, but whether we see it or not, it is a gift. Remember Paul said that all things work for our good (Romans 8:28). This also means that if God sees it is for our good He will not withhold it from us forever. It may not come at the time we think is best but it will always come in His perfect time.

Making It Personal

Do you sometimes doubt God’s gifts as good? How can you change your perspective about the gifts He gives? What gift should you praise Him for today?

Making It Personal Kids

What kind of gifts does God give? What should be our response to His gifts in our lives? Have you praised Him for the gifts He has given you?

Closing Prayer

Father, we praise You for the gifts that You give us. We know that they are always good and perfect and we repent of the times that we have wanted to reject them. In Jesus’ name, amen.
