Ephesians 4:17-24
Verse 19 Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.
We ended our time together yesterday with a mention of how important prayer is to our gaining a deeper relationship with God. A good prayer life is an essential part of our fellowship with God. Just as with any relationship it is important to have clear communication. And good communication requires listening and talking, but how can that work when the one we are trying to communicate is the God of the universe?
We talked yesterday about how we can know more about God from getting into the Bible in a more intentional way. We know He can talk to us through His Word but we need to remember we have a responsibility to communicate with Him as well. Yes, He knows what is going on in our hearts and minds and He knows exactly why we do what we do even when we may not be willing to admit to ourselves why we are doing a certain thing, but that doesn’t mean He doesn’t want us to tell Him about it.
Some people don’t like praying as they feel like they can’t pray “good enough” because they are under the false understanding that God wants us to talk to Him in some “holier than thou” King James English. While we do need to speak with respect to the Father, He wants us to speak from our hearts. He knows He made most of us to be of average vocabulary and He doesn’t want us to talk to Him in a way we don’t even understand. But He does want us to talk to Him.
One thing we do need to have is the desire to talk to Him, the desire of a real relationship. This is what sets Christianity apart from other religions as ours is the only God who wants true relationship with us. He wants us to meet with Him for meaningful conversation, to share His heart with us as we share ours with Him. He wants us to express our hurts, confusion and joys with Him. These may come out as frustration or praise but He is big enough to handle both.
The other day we mentioned how the Gentiles had futile thinking and that kind of thinking had led them to lose their sensitivity to the Spirit and things of God. This is the sensitivity we want to maintain to the Spirit of God. We want to be in tune with Him enough to enjoy conversation with Him and grow in an ever deepening relationship with Him which will have us living more like Him.
