Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 1 Timothy 6:6–8
One of the great idols of our age is money and the things it can buy for us. One of the tactics of the devil is to try to lure us off course by showing us all kinds of things and telling us, “You really need this!”
Looking back honestly over the past week, how many times has your attention been grabbed by some advert or something that someone else has, and you’ve felt that “want” turn into a “need” in your heart?
People have so many things, yet are so unhappy. Why? Because things don’t make us happy! We may feel a momentary buzz, but it never lasts, and the “more monster” rears its head and tells us we just need more and more. But having whatever you want doesn’t make you happy. Wanting what you have is the key. Appreciating what God has provided, and being content with that, truly is “great gain”.
If God has been revealing to you an unhealthy desire for things, why not write a stronghold-buster to deal with this issue? It will transform your life! If you need help, ask one of your course leaders, or a good godly friend who understands the principles of renewing your mind. (But do complete the stronghold-buster you are working on already before starting this one!)
