That Doesn’t Sound Good

James 1:1-4

Verse 1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.

Yesterday we started our study in the book of James. This book is kind of like a getting a spiritual tune-up, but why would we need a tune-up?

Whether it is our vehicle, equipment, musical instrument or even our bodies, there comes a time when a tune-up is necessary. Sadly some of us may wait until it is past time to get the checkup done. We may not even notice the various hints that things are not up to acceptable standards. Things decline so gradually that when we do realize something is up, the damage is done.

This is the way it is in our spiritual lives too. We don’t think about those little steps from the firm line of holiness, after all how could one bad movie or TV show hurt? But before we know it we have started watching them regularly not even giving it a second thought. It doesn’t have to be a show, of course, it could be a book, music, friendship or so many other things. The point is that it can happen to any of us at any time if we just let down our guard.

To think we aren’t in danger of these missteps is nothing more than pride and pride can get us in a heap of issues in life. Pride is one of the most dangerous traps that we, as Christians, will find ourselves. We start down that slippery slope as soon as we think we won’t.

We know that if we want our cars, equipment, instruments and bodies in good shape we have to maintain them and keep them tuned up. This takes paying close attention to the small details and getting it taken care as soon as possible. To ignore the signs could cause more damage or cause the instrument to go further off tune making it more irritating. But to go out of tune spiritually can lead others out of tune as well. And more importantly it will cause our relationship with Christ to become strained and unfruitful. Don’t we think it is time to get a tune up spiritually?

Making It Personal

When was the last time that you did a spiritual tune up in your life? What things seem out of balance in your spiritual life? Are you ready to get started on a personal tune up?

Making It Personal Kids

What happens when an instrument gets out of tune? Do you like hearing something that is out of tune? Do you want Jesus to make sure you are in tune with Him?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for making us aware of the ways that we are not in line with You and Your ways. Keep teaching us so that we can be more like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
