No Peace Like It

Philippians 4:2-7

Verse 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

After learning about the kind of prayer that helps us battle the feelings of worry and anxiety Paul talks about the result of those prayers.

Peace. This is one of the most sought after things in the world. It is also one of the most evasive. Many people take trips each year to places where they feel peace of mind and heart. We look for a rhythm that is less stressful. Some of the stress we carry is due to our choices but some is because of the way we worry over things outside our control.

We have talked about the battle that worry is in our lives. We need peace but it isn’t won by winning the battle of worry for ourselves. This peace from God is only acquired through resting in Him and His will. We pray in thanksgiving for all that He has done and accept that His will is better than our wants. As we said yesterday when we see His faithfulness in the past we can’t help but trust Him with the future and that is where the peace comes in.

We can’t help but know God’s peace when we are resting in His will. But this peace is not something that we can explain. It isn’t the surface peace we feel when on vacation in our favorite place, it can’t be achieved through our efforts. This peace is the gift of relationship, true communion of friendship, with God. This gift will bring further blessings too.

As if His peace wasn’t enough Paul tells us that this peace will guard our hearts and minds in Jesus. Worry seems to be a cancer of our hearts and minds and therefore having His peace on guard is like having a protection against worry. He alone can give the peace that holds us still in His will. When we are not focused on Jesus we seek the things of this world and that will cause us to worry and anxiety, disrupting our peace with Him.

Making It Personal

When have you experienced this peace from God? In what ways have you noticed your heart and mind being guarded by Jesus? How does knowing this peace affect the way you pray?

Making It Personal Kids

What is different about the peace that Jesus gives? How does Jesus’ peace guard your heart and mind? Have you experienced His peace?

Closing Prayer

Father, only You can give this unexplainable peace. Help us learn to know You in an ever deepening way so that we can enjoy the power of Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.
