Man of Miracles

Philippians 3:1-11

Verse 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,

Knowing Christ is only the headline of this verse. Paul expounds on this knowledge of who Christ is and we will start unpacking the list today.

What does it mean to know the power of His resurrection? We tend to just think about the fact that Jesus was God and therefore could come back to life if He wanted to. No tricks or magic, just God doing the glorious miracles that He is fully capable of. But is that all there is to it?

The people who had followed Jesus had witnessed miracle after miracle. Starting with the water being turned to wine He had revealed His powerful nature over the natural. He didn’t even have to touch the water or speak to it for it to be wine. And this wasn’t just a small bottle of wine it was six large stone water jars which held a combined total of 20-30 gallons of water (Mark 2:6). Jesus didn’t just turn one container of water into wine, He did 6 at one time without any physical effort.

These jars were there because they normally held water for ceremonial cleansings. These jars had been used for years to help people keep the Law of Moses. The irony of the situation is that Jesus called Himself the fulfillment of the Law. The Jewish people thought they knew God but Jesus was about to show them that they only knew about Him, they didn’t know Him in a personal way.

We mentioned yesterday that knowing Him, truly knowing Him, comes from studying Him and His character. Knowing Him will also change our character to be more like Him. But to know Him deeply, we need to have some understanding of the power that is His. This power that without a word changed ordinary water into the best wine of the party wasn’t limited to use on other people and things. No, this power is more than just doing things for physical world benefit.

His main reason for coming to earth wasn’t to bring recognition to Himself through His amazing miracles. Just as His first recorded miracle of His human life was one turning the bland into the amazing so His resurrection changed this physical life from one that has no lasting value to one where there is eternal value.

Making It Personal

Is His resurrection more than just a holiday event? What does that power that could bring Him from the dead mean for your life? Does knowing Him and His resurrection power change the way you think?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some reasons knowing about Jesus’ resurrection is important? Do you believe that He really rose from the dead? What does knowing He has this power make you think about Him?

Closing Prayer

Father, we would be eternally lost if not for Your saving us from the pits of a God-less eternity. You are that power. And this is the power of love. Help us desire to know You more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
