Let Me Give You a Hint

Exodus 12:1-28

Verse 13  The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you.  No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Throughout the entire Old Testament there are things which happened that pointed to a Messiah who would come to save God’s chosen people.  This is one of the most obvious foreshadowing of the work the Messiah would accomplish.  This was the beginning of a practice which would continue to the time Jesus came and then continue in a new way after His life, continuing on to our observing it all these years later.

We have the privilege of looking back and seeing the whole picture, but the Israelites of Moses’ day had no idea what was going to happen prior to hearing the instructions for the night.  This wasn’t a single day event, there were days of preparation which needed to be done to be ready for this night of death.

One of the things which would point to the Passover with the Messiah, was the lamb.  There were significant stipulations in the kind of animal that could be chosen and how it was to be prepared.  It had to be a male, no more than a year old, and without any defect.  The size of the lamb had to be the correct size for the family eating it.  If their household was too small to eat a whole lamb, they were to team up with their nearest neighbors to eat and care for their lamb.  They were to choose the animal on the tenth day of the month and care for it until the fourteenth day of the month before the entire community of Israel was to slaughter them at twilight.

The lamb was not just a meal for these people, it was all part of the bigger plan God had to save them from the oppression they had been experiencing.  As part of the event, they were to take some of the blood from the lamb and smear it on the door frames of the houses where they were going to be eating the lamb.  And when they ate the lamb they had to be dressed and ready to go.  This was the mark that they were obeying God and ready to go with Him into the wilderness.

Only Jesus could be the unblemished lamb able to be our Savior.  His shed blood has the same effect on His chosen people as the blood on the door posts and we need to be prepared to go when He calls us.

Making It Personal

What does it mean to you to know you are covered by His blood and righteousness?  Do you live a life of thankfulness?  What does it mean to you to partake in the Lord’s Supper?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to you that Jesus died for you?  He was rescuing the Israelites from slavery, what is He saving you from?  Have you thanked Him for that?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for putting things throughout the Old Testament to remind us of Jesus and His work on the cross.  Help us reflect on our need for His sacrifice so we can learn to live lives of thankful obedience and find what it means to live an abundant life.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
