Just Ask

James 1:5-8

Verse 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

We ended yesterday by saying we need to choose wisely in life, but how do we do that? What is wisdom and where can we get it?

Wisdom is not just a mass of knowledge and it isn’t just something that comes with age as some believe. Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived and it was solely because of God gifting him with it. James knows that true wisdom can only come from God and he knew that God freely gives it to those who ask for it sincerely.

If God is so willing to bless us with wisdom, why are so many of us walking around like we have never even heard of wisdom? Maybe one of the reasons we miss out on this gift is because we don’t realize just how much we need it. We are so sure that we know enough, that we don’t think to ask Him about what to do until we are in a pinch. It seems that we don’t think about needing wisdom until we don’t think we know enough.

Maybe the issue is that we don’t realize just how much we need wisdom on a regular basis. What if we were as willing and ready to ask God for wisdom as we are to ask Him for a close parking spot or that we won’t get caught speeding when we are running late? Or if we would ask as regularly as we ask for healing for someone’s health issues. It isn’t like God is going to run out of wisdom and yet it is something that we think we can live without.

James starts out our verse for the day by saying, “If any of you lacks wisdom…” Which one of us doesn’t lack it? But the real question is do we want it. James tells us that God will freely give wisdom if we ask and not just give it, but He will give it generously.

If we want wisdom then we need to ask. And when He gives us the wisdom we need, we must use it.

Making It Personal

Have you ever asked for wisdom? Is there a time you should have asked for wisdom? What do you need to ask for wisdom for today?

Making It Personal Kids

Who do you think is wise? Do you want to be wise? Who do you have to ask to get wisdom?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for giving us wisdom anytime we ask. Help us not forget to ask You so that we can live more and more like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
