Hebrews 6:1-3
Verse 2 …instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
We understand the importance of Jesus’ resurrection but that isn’t the only resurrection being talked about. While believing in the reality of Jesus’ resurrection on that first Easter is a must for us as Christians, if we don’t believe He really died and then three days later brought Himself back to life we miss the whole point of who He is.
By dying on the cross, He paid the price for our sins but by conquering the grave Jesus broke the price tag off of our sins. Because He conquered death, we don’t have fear it. His rising from the dead was Him breaking the shackles of death so we can someday experience the resurrection for ourselves. This is the resurrection the author of Hebrews was talking about. Jesus’ resurrection was the key for our living with Him forever.
The reason it is so important for us to know and have it solid in our lives as a foundation for our faith is because it is knowing that what He said He would do, He will do. When He said He would go and prepare a place for us, He was talking about making a place where we will be with Him forever. He wouldn’t do that unless He was wanting to keep us close to Him, to spend time with us.
We need to remember that when He returned from the dead, He was not as He had been before. He left the physical part of Him – this is obvious as He could pass through locked doors – but He was still very real to His followers. They saw Him and touched Him. He broke bread for His friends from Emmaus and eat fish in front of His disciples. They needed to know He was real so they could embrace the truth that He was alive again.
His resurrection is the hope they needed to know this life isn’t the only one, nor is it the life we should be living. When we understand the resurrection we will be able to see the truth of eternity. The resurrection is a reminder to us that when we are in Him, He has broken the hold sin has on us. Knowing we don’t have to be a slave of the sins which have so easily entangled us, frees us to live the life purchased by Christ. A life where the things of this life grow strangely dim and we start seeing things the way He meant all along.
Making It Personal
What does the resurrection mean to you? How does the resurrection affect a person’s life? Do you live a life which represents the resurrection?
Making It Personal Kids
How does it make you feel to know you will someday be resurrected? Does knowing Jesus died for you, make you want to live more like He did? Do you know someone who needs to hear the truth about His resurrection?
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for breaking that barrier for us. Help us live lives of gratitude. Teach us Your ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.
