Philippians 4:4-7
Verse 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
We have talked about a few different kinds of prayer but the truth is there is nothing we can’t pray about. He wouldn’t have opened the lines of communication if He wasn’t willing and wanting to hear from us. Even the fact that Jesus taught His followers to pray shows His willingness to listen each and every time we call out to Him. David also showed us in his many psalms how we can be real with God and pour out our hearts no matter the situation.
If you are anxious, prayer is a good way to remind yourself you are not alone. God is worthy of our trust and we know He works all things out for our good. Anxiety is something which can steal our joy but God is the restorer of joy. He wants us to remember He is in control, there is nothing which can happen to us which He can’t handle. Turning to Him in times of anxiety will bring Him pleasure as it will show how much we trust Him.
We can bring seemingly random things to Him, things like asking Him to help us remember what we were doing, wisdom about an upcoming decision, right words to say during a disagreement and a million other things from our day to day lives. Of course there are also moments of thankfulness. Whether it is narrowly missing the car who pulled out in front of you, the beauty of a sunrise or sunset, or maybe the moment you had with a loved one. We have so much to thank Him for and should always be aware of where all good things come from.
No matter the reason you are praying, the key is to pray. Having open communication with the Lord is a way of growing deeper in our faith. Prayer is a powerful tool to remind us of His being over all things. It is a way we learn to rely on Him in every situation. Moments spent in prayer can also give us the reminder we need that we aren’t alone, even when it feels like we have been deserted by everyone we thought were our friends.
If we want to grow in our relationship with the Lord, we need to grow in our prayer life, not until we think we are getting better at it but continuing to grow in it until the day we see Him face to face and our words lose their urgency for requests and we find our voices lifted in continuous praise to the only One worthy.
