Working that Helmet

Ephesians 2:1-10

Verse 10  For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Another portion of our knowledge which we need to guard is how God has created us for a good work to bring glory to His name.  We like to think about His work in our lives but we need to be just as intentional about our work for Him.  Our key verse for the day tells us God has chosen this work for us in advance.  He doesn’t wait for us to surrender to Him to figure out what He wants to do through us, He creates us to do what He has decided He wants done.

One of the most dangerous false teachings of modern Christianity is that salvation is for our benefit, we are saved from the penalty of our sins and have eternal life.  While those are benefits of our salvation they are far from the whole truth of our salvation.  We are saved from the penalty of our sin but as we talked about yesterday that doesn’t mean we are free to sin as we please.  And although we have eternal life we must not wait until then to live a holy life.

So what are these good works we are supposed to be doing?  It used to be a common thought to do a least one good deed a day, something like holding the door for someone, paying it forward at the drive thru or coffee shop, take a meal to the couple with a new baby or countless other little things done for others without expectations of receiving anything in return.  But good deeds are not what Paul had in mind for his friends in Ephesus.

These works Paul was talking about were not so much about doing things which made other people happy or even doing things which helped them, it was about pleasing God and making Him known.  It is doing things not for the recognition of others or making them happy, although they may be happy as a result, it is about making God smile.  When we are working for God we don’t make it known to other people, in fact we may find the greatest joy in knowing it is a secret that only God knows.

Knowing we are His handiwork takes away the burden of trying to win our salvation.  We can take it and arm ourselves with it knowing it is His handiwork and all we have to do to be able to use it in battle is to know what it means in our lives, do the things He has planned for us to do and make Him known and glorified.  This is all part of the battle plan and a good soldier listens to the Commander and knows the battle plan.

Making It Personal

What do you think God has created you for?  Are you doing what He wants you to do?  What do you get out of doing what He has called you to do?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you think Jesus could use you to do some things He wants done?  What are some things God could want you to do for Him even while you are young?  Are you doing these things?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for designing us to do what You want us to do.  Give us the eyes and hearts to know what You want us to do and the wisdom on how to go about doing it.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
