Who Is He Really?
Verse 6a Who, being in very nature God…
Yesterday we started talking about having a mindset like Christ and this week we will look into some of the ways that Jesus showed His humility when He came to earth.
First we need to remember that He isn’t just anyone. He is fully God. He was there at the creation of the world and has been since eternity past. His role in heaven was not created at some point in history, it has always been. He isn’t some second fiddle God in heaven, He is God.
We must set ourselves solidly on the fact of His being God. Without a firm grasp on His godliness we can’t understand just how humble He was to come into this world. We so easily fall into the trap of thinking of Him only in His humanity. And while He was perfectly sinless in His humanity, He was still fully human.
When we view Him only through the lens of His humanity we miss so much about who He is. We miss His nature through eternity past. We forget His presence at creation and the fact that when God said, “Let’s make man in our image” Christ was part of that “our.” He had a heavenly view of all the happenings over the entire world during every second of history. Nothing happened without His knowledge.
He wasn’t just an eyewitness to the happenings of history, He acted in His role as God. His power opened the Red Sea, He led His people through the wilderness, and led them into the land He had promised them. He kept His word about sending them into exile when they disobeyed. And at His chosen time He brought them back into the land He had given them.
Jesus didn’t come into existence in the time of the New Testament. His timespan has no beginning and has no end. This is the God that we serve. How could the One with all this prominence be the best example of humility?
Making It Personal
Have you ever thought about Jesus being God? What does it mean to you that Jesus has been in existence since before the world was created? Does it change your view of yourself to see Him as God?
Making It Personal Kids
Did you know that Jesus was around before the earth was created? Do you think Jesus had fun creating things on the earth? How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus created you?
Father, thank You for lovingly creating us. We praise You for Your being God. If we are honest with ourselves we are nothing compared to You. Thank You for choosing us as Your own. Help us live as You would have us live. In Jesus’ name, amen.
