What Was Left Behind
Verse 6b …did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
Now that we have remembered that Jesus is indeed God, we will start seeing the depth of His humility.
Even though He is God He chose to set aside His godliness to come to earth. One reason this is so important to understand is because we can’t begin to grasp what He would have had to set aside to come to earth to be our Savior.
In Heaven He was used to being the center of attention. He was being praised by every being there. He was known for who He truly is and because they knew His holiness they knew He alone was worthy of their praise. For this they were created and never do they fail to live out their purpose. It isn’t that He is a glory seeker, it is that all glory is due Him.
He was surrounded by the light of His glory. There is no night in heaven because the light of God’s glory fills the entire place. Therefore He never knew shadows or the darkness of a corner.
He wasn’t surrounded by sin. This may have been one of the biggest adjustments for Him when He came to earth. His very nature, as God, hated sin. He wouldn’t have been used to seeing all the sin that He would see during His lifetime on earth. He would see those He loved the dearest do things that would break His heart. He would have seen His mother disrespect Joseph. He could have seen Joseph lash out in anger at the younger siblings. He saw the selfishness of His siblings and later on His disciples.
The sin that may have hurt the most was the way that the religious leaders led the people in sin. They didn’t show the people what it meant to worship God. They were so busy proclaiming the law that they stopped worshiping the God who gave the law. Jesus saw them offering all the sacrifices that were required but knew that they were just doing it because it was the law. They were missing the whole point. Obedience out of obligation isn’t for God. Jesus knew that because they didn’t love God, they wouldn’t love Him either.
Making It Personal
What are some other things He would have missed from Heaven? What does it mean to you that He left all that because of your sin? Is there sin you need to repent of today?
Making It Personal Kids
What do you think it was like for Jesus in Heaven? Why would Jesus give up all that stuff for you? Do you love Him enough to obey Him?
Father, we often forget to think about what You gave up to come as our Savior. Give us a greater understanding and love for You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
