What is That?!

Writer: East Martin CRCEast Martin CRC

Exodus 3:1-12

Verse 6  Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”  At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.

Having been raised in the palace had not kept Moses from being unaware of what was happening with the people of God.  He actually became angry enough on one occasion to kill the Egyptian who was beating one of the Hebrew slaves.  The next day when a Hebrew asked if he was going to kill him over a spat with another Hebrew slave, Moses knew he hadn’t gotten away with murder and decided to run away from the problem.

This running away from the uncomfortable was one thing God needed to work on with Moses because he would find himself in many more uncomfortable situations in life.  It also put him in a place where he was going to need a lot of training.  This man raised as a prince was now on the run in the wilderness.

Once there he finds some ladies who are being bullied at the animal watering hole.  Once again Moses shows his streak of justice and makes it so the ladies can water their flocks.  This bullying must have been going on for some time since their father was used to them coming home later because of it.  This helping the girls out sets up the training ground for his next round of lessons for the work the Lord had made him for.

Working in the wilderness was much different than living in the palace.  Besides the obvious differences of wall versus open spaces or luxury versus dirt, Moses would have been going from the hum of people’s voices to the sounds of nature and the flocks.  But as different as it was, the day in our reading was stranger than any Moses could have imagined.

God had to bring Moses out of the palace and Egypt to meet God in a very real way.  Nothing would have gotten his attention like a burning bush that wasn’t burning up.  But there was more to this bush as there was a voice coming from it.  This voice was saying some of the most shocking things.  God was ready to rescue His people and He was going to use Moses to do it.  The great amount of training God had been making sure Moses was given, was nearing its climax.

Making It Personal

Have you ever come to a place where you knew what God had been training you to do and the time to do it was coming?  How resistant are you to learning the lessons He wants you to learn?  Are you willing to do big things for God?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some things you need to know to serve God well?  Why do you think God would say those are important things to learn?  Are you doing you best to learn them?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for making sure we have the opportunities to learn the lessons we need to be able to serve You best.  Help us desire to learn all You want us to learn.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
