This Little Light of Mine

Matthew 5:14-16

Verse 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Yesterday we mentioned that when we are living the way Jesus taught, people will be drawn to Him. This week we are going to look closer at what it means to be a light for Jesus in this dark world.

Jesus gave our passage today as a part of His Sermon on the Mount. He was talking about how we are to be living so that it reflects Him and while seasoning our world. It is so easy to think that we can just say Jesus is our Savior and that it is OK to keep it as something that is personal and private but Jesus was saying that this is far from the truth.

If we are keeping our relationship with Jesus as a secret by keeping our spiritual life as private we are actually saying that He is only a small part of our lives. Jesus needed His followers, then and now, to know that only a life lived boldly for Jesus would be pleasing to Him. This isn’t saying that we are to live like we are flaunting our relationship with Christ.

Living so that others know we are His is more about how we do life than what we say. Jesus was pointing out to His followers that we are to live in a way that it is obvious that we are His because we are living the same what that He lived. His example wasn’t about shouting who He was from the rooftops, in fact He often told those that He had healed that they should not tell anyone about it. It wasn’t that He was ashamed of who He was and what He had done but He didn’t come just as a healing machine.

What is it that causes us to live like we are ashamed of Him? If we truly love Him then we should be wanting to show Him to the world. This was the difference of the New Testament Church, they couldn’t help but show Him off to those around them because He was the most important person in their lives. This brings us to the question on how much we truly love Him. He says in today’s passage that we cannot keep our faith hidden away for when it is safe to shine for Him. We are to be shining for Him every minute of every day.

Making It Personal

When do you find yourself shy about shining for Jesus? Why do you fear shining in that moment? What does your reluctance show about your level of relationship with Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, forgive us of the times that we have hid our relationship with You. Spirit, convict us when we start to act like we are ashamed of You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
