There Was A Crooked Way

Philippians 2:14-18

Verse 15 …so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”

Knowing we are God’s chosen people should give us the incentive we need to obey Him. That isn’t always easy though when we see those living around us in ways that we know aren’t how we should live.

While we know that we are to live without fault, those that are of the world have a warped sense of what is right and wrong. This quote that Paul injects into this verse is from Deuteronomy 32:5 (They are corrupt and not his children; to their shame they are a warped and crooked generation.) Even as the Israelites were in the wilderness they had people in the areas around them, and even among them at certain times, which were evil. Corruption is not new and so we must not treat it as new.

While things seems to be growing more and more evil every year, evil has been around since just before the fall of mankind. It may be more obvious at times but it isn’t always blatant. The corrupt deeds are more obvious than the warped thinking that is behind them but we need to be aware that both exist. It may seem obvious that actions follow deeds but if we aren’t purposeful in remembering this we are apt to forget that the evil actions aren’t merely mistakes by the other person.

Even in our own lives it is easy to think of sin as just a mistake but if we were honest the majority by far are begun in our thinking. This is why Paul told the Romans that they needed not to become conformed to the world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2). If we aren’t renewing our minds with the Word of God regularly we are likely going to be conforming to the ways of this evil world.

Renewing our mind sets us up to live in holy ways instead acting like the world. Those living in wicked ways lead a crooked life but those who seek to follow the Lord will find themselves walking the straight path that He set. This straight path is one thing that will enable us stand out as His to the world.

Making It Personal

How easily can you discern something that is warped or crooked? Do you find warped and crooked thinking as repulsive? What things are you doing to renew your mind?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to be warped or crooked? Does that kind of life sound good to you? How can you learn to be more like Jesus wants you to be?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for gifting us with the Holy Spirit to help guide us. Father, please give us the wisdom to discern the crooked way from the straight and give us the strength to always choose Your way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
