The Truth of Being in His Shadow

Philippians 2:1-11

Verses 3b-4 Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Paul flips the topic from living in selfish ambition to walking in humility. An important factor of humility is that is achievable for Christians as we see the truth about ourselves in light of who God is.

We have talked about how it is easy to have quasi-unity and today we will show that it is possible to have a quasi-humility. This kind of fake humility shows itself through our words more than our actions, although both can be fake to a degree. A pretend humility comes from motives that are untrue. Yes, false humility is actually us lying to ourselves and trying to lie to others.

False humility comes into our lives when we try to help others see us as we want to be seen. We may pretend to be modest about our abilities and instead of saying thank you for a compliment we go on and on about how others could have done it so much better. Or maybe we dismiss a compliment about our outfit by saying how much we paid for it. These kind of responses keep the focus on us.

Do we see ourselves in a level headed manner, knowing our limits and our failures? Sometimes our self-view clouds the truth. We may like our new shirt and therefore think we look amazing today, but often it isn’t the shirt that is making us feel good about ourselves, it could be that we just think the shirt enhances our already stunning looks. Of course we wouldn’t say that out loud.

True humility comes from proper comparison. When we compare ourselves with others we are likely to feel pretty good about ourselves. We don’t sin like they do and so we don’t think we are all that bad. But it is a whole other situation when we measure ourselves with Christ.

God’s holiness is more than we can ever reach but that doesn’t mean that we should live as we like. We are called to live like God and part of that is understanding and admitting the truth of ourselves so that we can see how undeserving we are of His grace. Only then can we live humbly.

Making It Personal

Do you find yourself saying comments that reveal a faux-humility? Does your life show your view of God? Where can you live humbly today?

Making It Personal Kids

Why is pretending to be humble actually lying? What does it mean to be humble? Does knowing who Jesus is help you see the truth about who you are?

Closing Prayer

Father, only when knowing You in the fullness of Your glory can we be put in our rightful understanding of ourselves. Help us remember that we are not equal with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
