Psalm 119:1-8

Verse 5  Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying Your decrees!

Today we start a study into another area of abiding.  To truly abide we need to dive into the Word of God and apply all the truth we can to our lives.  The psalm we will be working through for the next few weeks will help us look at what it means to seek His Word and apply it so that we are living the full life of an abiding branch.

Psalm 119 starts out telling us that the man or woman that follow God’s law is blessed.  Who wouldn’t want to be seen as blessed.  But this being blessed isn’t the kind of blessing the world thinks about.  This isn’t about getting bigger cars, houses and bank accounts, it is about growing into more blessings in the spiritual realm.  We know that this is the case because the very next verse says that the ones who are blessed are those who keep His laws and seek Him with all their heart.

The obedience part of abiding can’t be done in the fullest way unless we know what His statutes are.  If we want to know what He wants us to do we need to read the book He gave us to learn His ways.   We need to be studying the way that Jesus lived so that we know how we are supposed to live.  The question is how much do we really want to live like Him?

These days it is so easy to spend hours reading people’s posts on social media and never find the time to read what God has to say.  We know more about what our friends think of life than we do about what God thinks of life.  Sure it is easy to read the random quote that sparks some reaction from us, but how often does that thought stay for more than a few seconds and we are off to the next quote?  We may even find a verse or two through our scrolling, but what is a tidbit of a crumb when we can have a feast all in one place?

So, as we begin this look at what it means to study the Word of God and make it an important part of our lives, let’s take some time to examine our lives and see how much of a priority the Bible has been in our lives and see where we need to be more intentional about taking the time, getting into the Word and meditating it.  Can we say the same as the psalmist says in our key verse, “Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying Your decrees!”

Making It Personal

How important is the Bible to you?  Does your interaction with it prove its importance to you?  What changes do you need to make about the amount of time you spend in the Bible?

Making It Personal Kids

What is the Bible?  Is it important?  What should you do with it?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for loving us enough to write this amazing Book using all the various writers to write Your story.  Please give us an unending hunger for knowing what You have to say to us.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
