Studying as a Sign of Love
Verse 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,
Now that we have seen the importance of faith in our Christian walk we look at how to enable that faith to grow.
“I want to know Christ.” When was the last time we have found ourselves saying that? It is so easy in the Christian walk to become complacent in our learning who He is. Oh, we know the stories and can recite some of His words but we can easily become like a spouse who has become so comfortable in our relationship that we forget to keep peeling back the layers of our loved one’s inner core. We are happy just knowing them on the surface levels and miss that there is always more to learn.
So what do we do when we want to learn more about someone? We try to spend more time with them and study them. We learn their likes and dislikes as well as their little quirks. We also make note of their pet peeves so we don’t fall into that annoyance. We try to uncover why they think the way they do and love spending time with them, just talking and listening.
So why is it that while we may say that we want to know Jesus more, we allow anything and everything to keep us away from Him? We may read our Bible sometimes but it is with the same level of interest that we have when we are listening to our spouse, child or parent as we scroll social media. We don’t give it our full focus and often we lack the excitement that is honestly needed for getting to know someone on a deeper level.
We may even fall into the habit of just reading a devotional with little attention shown to the Scripture passage given. How much would our earthly relationships grow if we only read articles about them or read their posts on social media? We may try to excuse ourselves by saying that we are too busy but do we ever examine what we are really busy doing?
Making It Personal
How intentional are you about getting to know God more? What steps do you take to deepen your knowledge about Him? Take some time today and read Psalm 119, could you honestly say these things about your relationship with the Word?
Making It Personal Kids
How do you get to know someone better? Do you want to know Jesus better? How can you get to know Jesus better?
Father, we confess the lack of love we too often show You by not wanting to know You more. Give us a hunger for You and an increasing desire to be in Your Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
