Verse 4:1 Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!
Since we know we are promised this glorious new body after leaving this earth we need to remember what we are to be about while we are still here.
Paul starts this final portion of his letter with some more tender words for his friends. He reminds them of his affection for them and how he longs to see them again. He also boasts about them calling them his joy and crown. He sounds like a proud papa about to burst his buttons. There is no doubt of how he felt for these people. They were near and dear to his heart.
Because of his love for them he does what any good father would do, encourage them to be all that they can be. Paul’s being a form of spiritual father to these young Christians gives him a heart for them that is more concerned for their spiritual well-being. He wants them to be all he knows that they can be. He takes great joy in how they have grown over the years and wants to make sure they don’t stall in that growth.
Stand firm! This isn’t a call to run after something or run from something, they need to know that what they have been taught was truth and that they shouldn’t waver in it. Wavering is so easy when we start second guessing because those around us believe other things. When we start paying more attention to what others believe than what we have been taught from the Word of God, we start to waver about what is truth. It isn’t that the truth has changed, it is that we have allowed ourselves to be clouded by the lies of the world.
Paul didn’t want these dear people to stop standing for the truth. He knew that there would come a time when they would encounter false teachers and they would need to remember the truth. We need the same reminder. We must stand firm on the truth we have been taught and continue to grow in our knowledge of the Scriptures so that we know truth without a doubt. Standing firm can’t happen if we have a shaky footing so let’s make sure we are on the solid ground of Biblical truth.
