Verse 11 …filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.
Paul concludes his list of prayer topics for his friends with a prayer for them to be filled with the fruit of righteousness. This fruit is the evidence of Christ in our lives and is a way that we can bring great glory and praise to God.
This fruit is what makes the world see the truth of Jesus. It doesn’t take much effort to see rotten fruit people in the world. There are plenty of people going around displaying the fruit of the enemy – selfishness, impurity, division, and other such things (Galatians 5:19-21). You only have to listen to a few minutes of news to know we live in a corrupt time. But the Church should be different. We shouldn’t be known for bearing fruit that resembles the nature of the world.
Paul understood the need for the Church to look different than the world. The people of the world are reflections of the evil they clamor after and we should reflect the nature of the One that we worship. If we are truly followers of Christ, we should be acting and speaking as He did. There should be no doubt in the mind of those we come in contact with that we are not like everyone else.
Our lives should be bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit that Paul listed for the Galatians – Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Jesus was known for each and every one of these traits and so should we. These fruits are so sweet to everyone, not just the person displaying them.
When we are living out love, people will notice. If our lives are flowing with joy even in the bad times, people will notice. When we work to making peace, not just keeping the peace or being tolerant, people will notice. When we don’t fly off the handle because we are being patient, people will take notice. When we are good and kind in our words and actions, people will notice. When we are living lives that are faithful, people will take notice. When we are gentle and control ourselves even in the moments of being upset, people will take note of it. The world is watching and we have the opportunity to bring Him great glory and praise by the way we live.
