Seizing the Prize

Philippians 3:7-16

Verse 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

We talked about our need to be intentional about pressing on in spiritual growth but is it all about us?

We like to make things about our abilities and capabilities. Our society helps us do this by attaching so much influence to positions it finds as better than others. It is all about status and being able to hold our own. But that isn’t how the life of faith works. Paul makes it clear that he is seeking to hold onto that which Christ has already took hold of.

Notice that Paul says, “Christ Jesus took hold of me” not “Christ Jesus took hold for me.” Christ taking hold of us is a much more sufficient than His taking hold of something for us. Because He has taken hold of us we are secure in Him. We are His and that is an eternal security.

Paul needed his readers to see that while Christ has secured salvation, we are to press on towards Him to receive it. This isn’t about working for our salvation because He has already fully paid the price. We could never afford it anyway. It is kind of like our salvation is waiting at the on-call window, paid but needing picked up.

We need to know Him so that we know how to press on to claim the prize. A prize isn’t a gift. No, a prize is something that is worked for. There is effort put in to achieve it. Christ has purchased the prize but we can’t gain it without doing what it takes to accept it from His outstretched hand.

We also need to remember that this prize is desirable. We aren’t pressing on to something we would rather leave be. This prize is more than we can even imagine. But to arrive at the goal we need to have our face turned towards the prize, His perfection, our salvation.

Making It Personal

Do you see Christ as a prize to accept? Does your life reflect your seeing Him as the ultimate prize? What type of prize do you see Him to be?

Making It Personal Kids

Do like prizes? What kind of prize do you think Jesus is? Do you want to have Jesus as your prize?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for making the way for us to be with You. Help us to desire You and press on to be what You have called us to be. In Jesus’ name, amen.
