Righteousness Through the Faith Filter

Philippians 3:1-11

Verse 9 …and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.

We have talked about what it means to be found in Christ and how our righteousness is not through obedience to the law, so how and when is this righteousness come by?

To be viewed as righteous, right with God, is something that each and every one of us should want but the truth is that it isn’t applied to all. Oh, Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient for all but it isn’t given to all. Just as we can’t work our way to righteousness through obedience to the law, we can’t just sit back and let Him flood His precious righteousness over us.

This righteousness is a precious gift. It cost Him dearly. He was righteous before coming to earth but because we couldn’t become righteous without His blood sacrifice, He gave up the comforts and praise of Heaven and came to live as a human among a sinful people. He suffered through a life of being wronged and betrayed all the while remaining perfect in every sense of the word. He never sinned. Never had a sinful thought about anyone, even going so far as to pray that God would forgive the very men that were putting Him to physical death. He never ignored someone who needed help and reached out to Him.

This is the righteousness that is ours when we place our faith in Him. We could never amount to anything in comparison to His holy living and yet if we put our total faith in Him for salvation He will put a filter over us to make it appear that we lived as perfect as He did. He loved us enough to lay down His life as a perfect sacrifice and all He asks in return is that we put all our faith in Him. When we try to obey our way into salvation we are telling Him that we don’t truly trust Him as much as we trust ourselves. Oh the danger in that!

He is faithful in all things. Paul needed his friends, and us, to understand the importance of faith in Him. He did the needed work. When we put our faith of righteousness in Him, we won’t be disappointed because His righteousness is sure. It is a guarantee.

Making It Personal

Do you find it hard to put your faith in Him and His sacrifice instead of your own efforts at keeping the law? What does His righteousness mean to you? How can you praise Him today for His righteousness?

Making It Personal Kids

What is faith? Is Jesus worthy of having your faith? Does it make you happy to know that Jesus’ righteousness can be counted as yours if you put your faith in Him?

Closing Prayer

Father, we can’t rejoice enough at Your plan of salvation. Your righteousness is ours only through faith in You, help us know what it means to fully place our faith in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
