Resurrection Power

Philippians 3:1-11

Verse 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,

We have started chipping away at what it means to know the power of His resurrection but such power requires more examination.

We have no doubt that Jesus had the power to perform miracles. We saw yesterday about His first known miracle as a human but there were so many others that were witnessed by so many. There were times when He cured a disease, corrected a deformation, brought sight to the blind and He even multiplied food to feed thousands. But as amazing as those miracles were, they didn’t affect as many people as the miracle of the resurrection.

Remember, all those miracles above were done by a living man who was fully God. These were all done for physical benefit and only temporal. Even raising Lazarus from the dead was not an eternal miracle, the friend of Jesus would have to suffer death again and his family would once again have to grieve the one they loved. It wasn’t that the power used for this miracle was less than He was capable of.

The power of the resurrection is that He broke the barrier of death. He raised Himself from the dead. Only God, as Creator, could give the breath of life to a human. Only God could leave the tomb before the huge stone was rolled away. He broke barriers that humans couldn’t. Most importantly He took away the power of sin and the enemy. Not just for now but He broke the barrier of eternal life.

The result of sin is death. Sin entered the world God created back in the Garden of Eden and things have been dying since then. Nothing lasts forever, at least not in this world and as long as you are not counting on Christ, the Godman. The enemy introduced sin and therefore death into the world and that is why the power of the resurrection is so important. This power that raised Christ from the dead is the same power that will bring us to eternity. The power that raises Him from the dead can break the hold sin has on us too. But He doesn’t break its hold on everyone, just those who know Him as Lord and Savior.

Making It Personal

Does sin still have a powerful hold on you? What power is stronger in your life, sin or the power over sin? What area of your life needs to be seen through the power of the resurrection?

Making It Personal Kids

Why was the resurrection such a big miracle? Does Jesus’ resurrection mean you can have a resurrection someday? How does the resurrection help you know Jesus better?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for using Your power to conquer death forever. Help us see You more completely through the knowledge of Your power. In Jesus’ name, amen.
