Reason to Party
Verse 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
In our time together yesterday we discussed how important it is to be on the lookout for false teaching while allowing others to preach the truth about Jesus. But that isn’t all that we need to look at in this situation of Jesus being preached by those who have ulterior motives. We can be so focused on the event of others preaching the Word that we miss one very important factor, the result.
While we may not like the method that is being used to spread the Gospel we must react to the positive result of lives changed for Christ. If we become so consumed with the way the message is going out that we fail to see the lives being changed, we reveal the sin of pride in ourselves. We have to remember it isn’t about us and therefore isn’t about things happening in our way.
Jesus said that there is great rejoicing among the angels in God’s presence when one person repents of their sin (Luke 15:10). Why is there rejoicing? Because a great victory has been won. Repentance is the result of the Holy Spirit doing a mighty work of conviction and presenting the truth to our hearts. None of us comes to see our sin in the light of God’s holiness without the Holy Spirit revealing it to us.
The Holy Spirit isn’t limited by a messenger’s words. He will do His work of presenting the truth to God’s chosen people, even using mouths that aren’t surrendered to Him. This work was done in each of us through no power of our own and so why should we try to limit His work in others?
Instead, the grace of His work in people should bring us great joy. We should be full of praise when we see His work in someone. Seeing His transforming work should remind us of all that He has forgiven us of. Just as there is great joy when a new addition is made in our earthly families we should rejoice when our spiritual family grows. Let us learn to see the addition to God’s Kingdom as further proof of His compassionate heart. He loved the world so much that He sent His Son as the perfect sacrifice and sent His Holy Spirit to guide us to become the Bride of Christ. This is definitely a reason to rejoice!
Making It Personal
Have you ever questioned someone else coming to Christ because they came to believe through different means than you did? When was the last time you rejoiced over someone coming to Christ? If you are to rejoice in a person repenting, shouldn’t you also be eager to share the Gospel?
Making It Personal Kids
What are some reasons you get excited? Do you get excited when someone becomes a believer in Jesus? Do you know anyone that needs to hear about Jesus?
Father, we praise You for the work that You do in our lives. Help us seek out people who need to know about Jesus and give us the words that we need to share with them. And when someone becomes a Christian, help us rejoice as the angels do. In Jesus’ name, amen.
