Purpose Fulfilled

Philippians 2:12-13

Verse 13 …for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.

After another day talking about how we need to surrender to His will we look at the reason for our obedient living. We know we are to work out our salvation through His work of sanctification in our lives through His guidance and our obedience to His will by acting upon it, but what good does it do? Paul says that when we act according to His will, it fulfills His good purpose. So what is His purpose?

His purpose is to reveal Himself. By obeying Him and living out His will in our lives we will be exposing Him for who He really is. He is using us to be His ambassadors to this world. He created the earth many years ago and it was created perfectly. It wasn’t long though before a created being who had been thrown out of heaven came to cause problems. This evil being caused the created man to doubt God and His goodness and in doing so led them to sin against the God of creation.

This sin broke the relationship between God and man. And in fractured relationship the following generations walked away from the most important relationship they could ever enjoy. Throughout history God has maintained a relationship with some of His humans. He even came as a man to live among them, to feel their pain, ultimately dying for the sins that had and would be committed, and then He broke the barrier of death by rising to life again.

During His earthly ministry He taught His people what it meant to be His followers and then before leaving them He commissioned them to carry His message and teaching throughout all the earth. This is His purpose. He hasn’t stopped seeking the lost. He hasn’t ended His work on creating men and women to carry on the mission of who He is.

Yes, this is the purpose that He has given us, to know His will and do it. For it is when we are doing His will, that others will see the truth of His teachings. When we are obedient the world will see that He is true. He is Holy and good. He is gracious and merciful. We are to live as mirrors of Him, for His glory.

Making It Personal

How does living like Him reveal Him to the world? In what ways have you been revealing Him? In what ways have you been marring His image?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to live like Jesus? What are some ways that you live like Jesus? What are some ways that you don’t live like Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, please forgive us the times that we have not been faithful in living for You. Give us a greater desire for You and Your will so we can fulfill Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, amen.
