Power of Authority

Philippians 3:17-4:1

Verse 21 …who, by the power that enables Him to bring everything under His control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like His glorious body.

We talked a bit yesterday about the coming of Jesus and our need to be clean and ready. He could not come back for us if He didn’t have the power to do so.

We think of Jesus having all power but Paul makes an interesting comment in our verse today about Jesus being enabled by power. His being enabled seems to imply that the power is not His own. This is one of those “hard to wrap our heads around” topics as it is the Godhead working in separate capacities. The Father gives the Son this power that allows Him to take everything under His authority (1 Corinthians 15:27).

This authority does not give the Son authority over the Father, the Son is still under the authority of the Father and so must only use His power to do the will of the Father. This is one of those things that we need to remember about His authority over us. We must submit to His authority by submitting to His will, not once in a while but every second of every day.

Knowing we are to emulate Christ in life this is one of the basic ways to do it. He has given us so many ways that we can copy His behavior but this one is of utmost importance. If we don’t submit to His authority we will be under the authority of our own desires and that is a spiritually dangerous place to be.

While authority is often scoffed at in our society, if we were to live as Christ and submit to the power of His authority, we will find that we are sticking out as His ambassadors. Ambassadors to the greatness of His power and control. We will also find that there is a peace in our heart that isn’t calming us when we try to be in control of our own lives. By trying to be in control of our own lives we come to find the weight of that responsibility. Why would we want to bear that burden when we can lay it on Him by submitting to His authority?

Making It Personal

Is there an area in your life where you are still holding out about submitting to His authority? What do you need to do in order to come under His authority? Do you want to submit or do like to be in control?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean to submit to Jesus’ power? Is Jesus in control of your life? Do you want Jesus’ way more than your own?

Closing Prayer

Father, we confess the times that we have tried to stay in control of our own lives and made a mess of things. Help us understand what it means to fully submit to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
