So the devil is a real but defeated foe, and he is subordinate to us. All he has are lies, and he can do nothing more than shout them at us. We severely limit the extent of his influence in our lives when we really get hold of these truths.
However, we still face this daily battle for our minds, and we need some robust tactics to be able to spot those lies, rather than fall for them.
“…take every thought captive, making it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
In the last session, we heard about how bank clerks are trained to spot forged bank notes. Rather than studying all manner of fakes, they simply study the genuine article – they become so intimately acquainted with all the details of the real thing, that when a fake note comes along, they can spot it a mile off. In the same way, the best way to defend ourselves against the devil’s lies is to know the truth. We don’t need to focus on the enemy or go looking for him – we need to focus on Jesus. We don’t have to believe every thought that comes into our minds – instead, we can shine the light of the Word of God on each one and choose to accept it or reject it. That is how we win the daily battle for our minds!
We are not called to chase away the darkness. We are called to turn on the light.
