One in Heart and Mind

Acts 4:32-35

Verse 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.

Today we start a couple of days looking at what the Church looks like when we are living out the generosity that we are called to live.

Our Scripture passage today is the evidence of God working in the heart of the new Church. The people in the Church were mostly Jews at this point and it was not easy to be followers of the Jesus movement. Jesus had been killed and risen from the dead in the not so distant past and these followers of Jesus knew that they were under the microscope of the Jewish leaders. Yet they were more concerned at learning more about God and living a life that reflected His love. This showed itself by the love they were showing each other.

One of the marks of this early Church was how they were one in heart and mind. They had a unity of heart and mind because they had the common bond of Christ. They weren’t working at being unified, they were unified because of their common heart of Christ. A.W. Tozer once wrote that to be unified doesn’t take trying to match each other but to both match the same standard. His illustration used the tuning of a piano saying that if many pianos are tuned to each other they will not match but if they are all tuned using the same tool they will all be in tune with each other.

This is the same with the Church. When we are all in tune to the Christ we will in turn be one in heart and mind. This isn’t to say we will agree about every little thing but that we will be on the same page when it comes to important things of the Church and its ministry. To know what that ministry is we need to be in the Word seeking what Jesus said our ministry is.

The ministry hasn’t changed since Jesus gave the marching orders in what we call the Great Commission. If we love God and His Church then we must be about the business that Jesus commissioned us to. We are to go and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of Jesus and teach them to obey the commands that Jesus taught. This is our mission too. It must be our united mission.

Making It Personal

How united in heart and mind are you with those in your church family? How in tune are you with God? Are you living out the Great Commission?

Making It Personal Kids

What is a disciple? What does it mean make disciples for Jesus? Are you one of Jesus’ disciples?

Closing Prayer

Father, we know we need to be in tune with You and each other. We also need to be going out and making more disciples for You and this is something that we as the Church need to work on. Give us the wisdom to carry out Your commission. In Jesus’ name, amen.
