Listen and Do
Verse 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
Yesterday we ended with discussing how God has goals for us. Today we look at His goal for us so that we can know what He is wanting us to do.
This passage lists a few of the special jobs that help the Church grow spiritually but what we want to focus on is more the way that growth is happening. Verse 12 tells us that the reason God gave these gifts were to equip His people for works of service. Two things we need to take notice of is who He equips and for what purpose. Remember as we go through our study today that the capital “C” church isn’t talking about the four walls and a specific congregation but rather the whole of God’s people worldwide.
First off we look at who He equips, His people. This is commonly understood as the Church but that doesn’t mean everyone that walks in to the four walls. The people Paul is talking about God equipping are the ones that are committed to God and living in His ways. Those He calls, He equips for the job. And He doesn’t just hand out jobs willy-nilly. He has created each of His people for very specific jobs and it is for the building up of the Church and for His glory.
Secondly He equips His people to build up His Church. Now this isn’t just the idea of building up numbers. No, God is wanting His people equipped to build up His Church to know Him and His will so that they aren’t easily misled by people who twist words so cleverly to make lies sound like the truth. Unless we are growing in our knowledge of God and His ways, we become easy targets of lies and false teachers.
God has called people to these positions so that His people are being taught truth and growing deeper in their relationship with Him and each other. Truth and love are what binds the Body of Christ together and brings God the greatest glory. But let us not forget that this building up requires that we are listening to the people that have these callings and weighing their words with Scripture and then acting upon what we have heard. We can’t let these callings become useless because we aren’t seeking to know God more. We need to love God so much that we love the gifts He has given His Church. And if we have these callings from God we need to be using them to build up the Church. We don’t want to fail Him in this.
Making It Personal
When was the last time you desired to learn so that you could help build the Church? Do you have any of these callings from God? If yes, what are you doing with the calling?
Making It Personal Kids
What the callings that are listed in these verses? Do you recognize any of them? Do you know anyone with those jobs?
Father, thank You for equipping people in each church family to do these jobs of building up the Church. Father, give us conviction to listen, learn and obey Your teachings through these gifted people. In Jesus’ name, amen.
