Lifted Up by God

Philippians 2:5-11

Verse 9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name,

Having seen yesterday that Jesus was the perfect sacrifice and seeing His humility as He surrendered to the death of a criminal, we look to the result of His sacrifice.

Jesus’ death isn’t the end of this wonderful story. If He hadn’t died, our sins would not have been covered with His perfect blood. He also wouldn’t have been lying dead in that Garden tomb setting up the biggest miracle, His resurrection.

His death was only the first half of His mission. He wanted more than our salvation, He was on the earth not to just die for our sin but to destroy the very thing that our sins called for. Sin requires death as payment. Death was the ultimate punishment, until Jesus smashed its hold. His resurrection was a major blow to the enemy and his operations. But the grave couldn’t hold Jesus because He was fully God.

It is this final victory over death that brings us the opportunity of eternal life. He died to pay the price for our sins and then rose from the dead to free us for eternal life with Him. This is the level of His love for us. He loves us so much that He wants us with Him forever. Isn’t that what we want too?

This is the reason that God exalts Him. This great demonstration of His ultimate power, the power that created life in the first place, is proof of His being God. There is no way that a human could have done this. This is the God who deserves all worship and so God the Father shows His great pleasure in Jesus fulfilling Their plan by exalting Him.

Jesus wasn’t just exalted, He was exalted above ALL others! He is given the highest place of honor. He alone deserves this honor and therefore is given the name that is above every other name. This is the God that we worship!

Making It Personal

How does thinking about the power needed to rise from the dead change the way you worship God? What things has He conquered in your life? Who will you tell about God and His power?

Making It Personal Kids

How did Jesus win over death? Do you get excited about spending forever with Jesus? Who can you share Jesus with today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You. There are no other words great enough to express our gratitude for what You have done. You alone are worthy to be praised. Help us see You as Lord and know that we are not. In Jesus’ name, amen.
