Let’s Brag Him Up
Verse 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—
When we have come to understand the act of living the covenant that is ours with God, we have to be careful not to go to the extreme of thinking we can boast about our in our relationship with God.
Though we are to be obedient to Christ we have to remember that it isn’t that we are working for our salvation. The knowledge that we are in covenant should help us know that we are in joint workmanship with the Father, but that it is all under His sustaining power. We must decide to act as He has called us to knowing that our reason is to bring Him glory. This is why we must boast in the Lord.
He should be the reason we are keeping our part of the covenant. Our obedience has to be our choice but it should never be our own glory. We can become so consumed with looking good and proving that we are good Christian people that we miss the whole point of being in covenant with God.
God could have made a covenant with any group of people that He wanted and He did! 1 John 3:1 says, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” He chose us to live for His glory. He strengthens us to live that way and this is the reason we can boast in Him. He is guiding and directing and has paid all of the debt our sin made. He is the only reason we can look forward to eternal life with Him.
Boasting in Him is about making Him known for all He is and all He does. Paul was boasting about all the things that God had done for him. He had called him and then preserved his life although not always protecting him from all physical harm. He could boast that he was in prison for Christ. He could boast that God brought him out of the legalism of his earlier life.
God is wanting us to be willing to boast about what He has done for us. It doesn’t have to be a big thing in our lives before we boast about Him. The seemingly smaller items of trusting Him are sometimes the best things to boast about since they are the very things that others can relate to.
