Psalm 119:65-72
Verse 66 Teach me knowledge and good judgement, for I trust Your commands.
When we come to the point of full commitment to God and His Word we will find that He becomes more important to us. And with His becoming more important to us we will find that we start longing for deeper understanding and knowledge.
Just as we need to be intentional about our commitment to God, we need to be intentional about learning more about Him and wanting Him to teach us good judgment. True commitment and abiding doesn’t mean that we are just along for the ride. We need to be doing our part to grow in our knowledge of what God is wanting to teach us so that we can do all that He is wanting us to do. We need to see the depths of who He is and seek to reach depths in our relationship with Him.
But is knowing we want more knowledge enough? No, He wants us to ask Him for more of it. But when we ask, we need to be ready to learn. And often lessons aren’t learned without going through something to learn what He is wanting us to know. But that shouldn’t scare us away from asking for His teaching.
We also need to take note of the second part of the psalmist’s request, which is the very hinge that the request for learning hangs on, his trust of God. You see, the truth is that we won’t find ourselves truly wanting to learn knowledge and good judgment from God until we trust Him. Trust is the very thing that will draw us to want more of Him. Just as a student learns the most from the teacher they feel they have a connection with, we will find ourselves looking more to Him for guidance when we see Him as someone we can trust.
Trust comes as relationships are built and so it only makes sense that the level of our trust in Him will say a lot about our closeness to Him. If we truly want a deeper relationship with Him we need to be looking at the areas in life where we aren’t trusting Him and that will show us where we need to grow in our relationship with Him.
