Luke 2:6-15

Verse 11  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord.

The long awaited day has finally arrived and just like Mary, Joseph and the shepherds we should be in awe.  He had been promised thousands of years before and after God being silent for 400 years He came to speak in person.  But not for a few years.

The world went on as it always had, unaware of what had come to be that night.  In fact, it would be about 30 years before they were starting to see the signs that God was among them as a man.  And like today, some would accept the truth about Him in faith, while others would reject Him wanting someone who would rescue them physically by getting rid of the Romans.

The people of that day thought their biggest problem was the ruling government, but what they didn’t understand was that they had a much bigger issue in their lives.  They had walked a good distance away from God in the previous generations – going through the rituals of righteousness, but missing God in their worship.

We are much the same way.  We sometimes struggle under a government that is secular and only go through the motions of the traditions of church.  We may go to church every Sunday and may even read our Bible sometimes through the week, but we don’t always allow the truth of the Scriptures to penetrate our hearts.

Christmas is the perfect time for a reset.  A time to remember why He came and evaluate what His coming means to us.  Are we just caught up in the spirit of the season or are we truly celebrating the fact that He came to earth to save us from the penalty of our sins?  The answer to that question reveals what Christmas truly means to us.

Making It Personal

What have learned about how you see Christmas?  Has the story of Christmas changed your life?  What does the Christ of Christmas mean to you?

Making It Personal Kids

What does Christmas mean to you?  What is your favorite part of the story about Jesus’ birth?  What does Jesus mean to you?

Closing Prayer

Father, we thank You for sending Jesus to live as a perfect human for our salvation.  Help us come to love the true You and enjoy the true meaning of this holiday.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
