Into the Depths

Philippians 1:1-11

Verse 9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight,

While it is of great importance to love and learn more about one another, how much more important it is that we are learning more and more about God and how to love Him deeply.

Paul was praying for his friends to grow in their knowledge of the Almighty. Not just to know about Him but to know Him in a real and personal way. This growing knowledge of the Father is what will help us in our growing together in unity. But Paul doesn’t stop with growing knowledge. He knows there has to be a deep level of insight.

Insight is slightly different than knowledge as it gives a deeper understanding as to the why of the matter not just the facts of the matter. This is the difference of living by the law and living through Christ.

The Pharisees were a sect of Jewish people who were among the most pious and religious of the time and region. Jesus had more run-ins with them than any other group. They were constantly telling Jesus that He was breaking the law, all the while missing that He knew the law even better than they did. The point that the Pharisees were missing is the same point we miss when we don’t grow in our insight of who Jesus is.

Jesus knew that obedience wasn’t about the law but about loving the Father enough to obey. It isn’t the law that we need more insight into, it is the One that gave the law. The law can’t make us righteous. It can make us appear moral but righteousness only comes through intimate relationship with God and the blood of Jesus.

To get to know Jesus deeply is the key to learning His desires and the heart behind His laws. We know that He loves us and wants what is best for us. He desires us to understand that He wants us to live in a certain way so that we can reflect Him and His character. This is the call to the Church. We need to get to know Him so that we can reflect Him clearly. We aren’t called to be moral, we are called to be His holy people. Not for the sake of the law, but as His Son’s Bride.

Making It Personal

How intentional are you about getting to know Jesus in a more personal way? Do you obey the commandments because you feel you have to or out of loving obedience? What do you want to know about Christ today?

Making It Personal Kids

How do you get to know someone better? How can you get to know Jesus better? Do you want to know Jesus better?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for wanting to know us. Give us an ever growing desire to know You more intimately. In Jesus’ name, amen.
