In it Together

Philippians 2:1-11

Verse 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion,

After reminding his readers that a life of faith will bring opposition Paul takes the opportunity to show the benefit of being together in the body of believers.

There is nothing like an encouraging word from someone who has experienced something similar to what we are going through. This is one of the greatest benefits of being in a loving Church family. Paul knew that the Church in Philippi would continue dealing with those who were trying to destroy the young Church. There were those in Philippi who were spreading lies about them in hopes of squelching the truth about Jesus.

As we talked about yesterday it is sometimes hard to stand for truth when we think we are all alone. Of course we are never alone because the Holy Spirit never leaves us but He also made the provision of other believers to stand beside us and push ahead with us. But this standing with other believers only works if we are in unity about the truth. If there is not a solid understanding of truth in the Church there will be no encouragement.

We will only be in unity with our fellow believers if we are in unity with Christ. He is the one that is truth so it is only when we are in unity with Him will we can be in unity with each other. So where does our encouragement truly come from? Is it from those that are standing with us? Or is it the Truth that is encouraging us?

Being in a unified Church is a special blessing but being encouraged and supported by the unity had with the originator of truth is of more encouragement than any human could give. The knowledge that Jesus is with us, standing firm as Truth, should be the greatest comfort and encouragement to us in the midst of opposition.

Making It Personal

What does it mean to you that Jesus is the Truth? Have you ever been encouraged by a fellow believer? Who can you encourage to stand firm today?

Making It Personal Kids

Have you ever had someone give you encouragement to stand for truth? Have you ever encouraged someone who was standing for truth? Who can you encourage today?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the reminder that Jesus is truth and that we will only find unity with each other when we are standing in unity with You. Help us encourage each other to stand for the truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
