Psalm 100:4-5
Verse 5a For the Lord is good and His love endures forever;
To say that we are thankful that God is good seems like a shallow statement these days. Our vocabularies are full of words which seem so much grander. We may think, “No, God is great!” or maybe, “He is so awesome!” While those are both true, the psalmist wasn’t trying to place God in a smaller box with his statement, he was speaking about God’s character.
So what does it mean that God is good? It isn’t talking about His living with no sin, though we should be thankful for that or we wouldn’t have the opportunity to find our salvation in Him. But this isn’t just about merely acting morally, it is about being godly. His goodness was something that glowed from Him because His character had a pureness about it.
He didn’t have to strive to be good, it was simply who He was and that is why His love endures forever. If He was only good part of the time it would show that His love is only given when He is in a good mood. Knowing His mood never changes from good, we can be assured that He will never love us less.
Since this goodness of Christ is part of His character, we too can experience it through the Fruit of the Spirit. When we are bearing the Fruit of the Spirit, it shows the radiance of God’s goodness. Left to ourselves we would never show the tiniest glimpse of His goodness.
When we are thankful for His goodness we will find a joy in obedience. Oh, that more of us would strive to be considered one of these good people.
Making It Personal
In what ways would you be considered good? Are those thinking you are in the “good” group looking at you from a godly point of view or a secular? What goodness do you wish you saw in your life?
Making It Personal Kids
How would you define good? Is it easy to be good? How do you want to live like Christ?
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for displaying such goodness and enduring love. May we live our lives in such a way that we reveal You to others. In Jesus’ name, amen,
