God’s Tool Chest

Romans 12:3-8

Verses 4-5  For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

Loving others isn’t simply so we get along so others can notice, we have roles we should be doing in God’s service and it will be a lot easier if we can get along lovingly.  This is a topic which doesn’t sit well with everyone because there are those who are more willing to serve than others, but the truth is God didn’t call any of us to sit on the sidelines of the life of the Church.  He not only called us to various positions but also equipped us for those positions.

God didn’t create the Church as a spectator sport, sure not everyone was called to be the pastor but none were left ungifted so we could watch everyone else do everything.  There are a couple of sayings which, though not speaking specifically to the Church, reflect the truth of things among believers more than we wish they would.  “If you want something done, give it to the busy person because they will make it happen” and “20% of people do 80% of the work” show how hard it is to get people to step up and be part of the action instead of just sitting by watching it happen.

We may not know what we are gifted in, but if we never try anything we will never know what He has gifted us to do.  We may even find things we aren’t good at which means God has placed someone else in the church body to fill that position, but not being good at one thing doesn’t mean not trying anything else.  We can’t use not knowing what He has gifted us to do as an excuse to do nothing.

By being willing to let others do everything and not being willing to do anything of service in the church, we are not only saying we don’t love God but that we don’t love our fellow Christians.  Only a person who loves themselves first and foremost would let everyone else carry the weight of responsibility for ministry in the Church.

When we start to serve in the way He has gifted us, we will find so much joy.  It may not always be easy, but we will find it to be a blessing and it will be a blessing to others too.  The whole church and maybe even the surrounding community will be blessed by you doing what He called and created you to do.  We must come to the point of surrendering to His work.  No matter our age there are things we can do for the Lord and His Church.

Making It Personal

Do you know what He has gifted you to do to serve Him?  Are you using your gifts?  Where do you feel like you should be serving but are not?

Making It Personal Kids

Do you have an idea of something the Lord has given you an ability to do for Him?  How do you think He wants you to help at church?  Do you like to help others at church?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for wanting to use us in Your work.  Give us the wisdom to see what You have created us to do and the heart to do it.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
