Follow the Lead

Philippians 2:12-13

Verse 13 …for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.

Now that we know who is to be leading this dance of sanctification we need to talk about how we need to follow.

God’s work in us is about bringing our will and actions in line with Him. This helps the dance go smoothly. If our will is not in line with Him it only means we are trying to take back the control of our own lives. We need to be surrendered to Him if He is going to work in us. Paul wanted his readers to understand this, where there is not full surrender, there is no Lordship only arrogance.

To be like Christ we can’t try to be more like ourselves. He didn’t call us to look like ourselves. When the believers were first called Christians in Antioch it wasn’t because they were living as they desired. The very word Christian means to be a Christ follower. Did you catch that? It doesn’t mean Christ believer but Christ follower. If we are truly His followers we will find that His desires will be taking shape in our own lives. His will is becoming our guiding light.

Our verse for the day says that He is working in us to “will and act,” knowing His will and not acting upon it, is not following His lead. If we are not surrendering to His will in our lives, we are surrendering to our own will. We are saying that we are the ones that should rule our lives and we are therefore saying that we aren’t a Christian. We are a self-follower.

Jesus said that it wasn’t enough to call Him Lord, we need to obey His teachings (Matthew 7:21). The will of the Father isn’t just to be known, it is to be obeyed. Jesus was the ultimate example of someone following the Father’s will. Jesus didn’t just call God, Father, He obeyed Him even when it caused Him physical pain and abandonment by His friends. God wants to work out His will in our lives too. He gave us Christ as a model and then has called all of us to be His followers. What holds us back from surrendering to His will? Could it be that we don’t want to step off of our throne?

Making It Personal

What holds you back from full surrender to His will in your life? Why don’t you want to submit about that issue? Do you trust Him to lead?

Making It Personal Kids

Does Jesus ever want you to do something that you don’t want to do? Why is it sometimes hard to be like Jesus? Why should you always think and act like Jesus?

Closing Prayer

Father, we repent of the areas in our lives that we try to retain control of. Help us learn to surrender to Your will so that You can work out the sanctification we need to be more like You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
