Division of Truth

Philippians 1:20-30

Verse 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him,

We talked a little bit yesterday about the importance of living a life that reveals God's work in us. This is a topic that will come up often in this book and so today we will focus more on how living for Him could cause us grief from those in the world around us.

In verse 28 Paul reminds his friends not to be frightened by those who oppose them. This is something that would be good for us to remember too. While we may not be facing the extreme opposition that the believers in Philippi were, when we stand for Christ we will face opposition. The message of Christ is offensive to those who hate truth. The hatred of truth is growing. Truth often stands in opposition to the desires of the flesh, therefore when we stand for truth we will find ourselves standing against things that the world says is normal.

These lies are something the Church through the ages has stood against and we must also. We cannot allow the popular teaching of tolerance to invade the Church or our Christian minds. The world's understanding of tolerance is that what feels right to a person is truth. That lie is straight from the enemy of God as it teaches that there is no absolute truth in our world.

Truth is, by its very definition, a thing that is solid and singular. Since truth cannot be fluid it cannot be defined by our feelings. Our feelings are not trustworthy. They are driven by what makes us happy and if we are honest some things that make us happy in the flesh are not of God.

Standing with God will bring us frustrations with family and friends if they are not standing on truth themselves. The fact that it causes issues with our family and friends shouldn’t make us turn from truth. We must remember that Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) To turn from truth means turning from the Lord, to choose family and friends over the Lord. It is important for us to remember that living for Jesus will mean opposition in our lives.

Making It Personal

Have you faced opposition to your faith? Do you find it hard to stand for truth? What truth do you need to stand for today?

Making It Personal Kids

What is truth? Do you find it hard to speak the truth around people who don’t agree? What is the truth about who Jesus is?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for the reminder that not everyone will agree with us when we hold to the truth of You. Give us the wisdom to know the truth of a situation so we can stand with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
