Verse 22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires;
We continue looking at the ways that we are called to live like Christ that we should be learning from being in the Word and under the teaching of the Word.
Our passage today is reminding us that we are not to be living in our former lives. When we commit to being Christ’s followers we surrender to Him and we are given a new life through the power of the Holy Spirit. Did you see that?! We are given a new life at that time. Our new life is not something that is in the long distance future. The new life isn’t something that is on a “Build a New Life Trait a Month” plan. He gives us the new life and we are to be living it. Yes, there are ways that we will be growing in our new life but it isn’t like we are living a part new life and part former life. That isn’t His plan at all.
He wants to make us new and if we are truly committed to Him we will want that for ourselves too. We need to learn from what we have been taught about living in this new life and part of that is putting off the old life. That is the important key for us. We have to be intentional about what our old life had that doesn’t align with living the new life in Christ. We need to take a deep and honest look at our lives and identify and address those things that reflect our sinful lives so that we can know what needs putting out from our lives.
Taking an intentional look into our lives should never be attempted without the Spirit’s help. We need to be taking some times by ourselves, with our Bible and in prayer for the Spirit to help us know what in our lives needs to be taken out like trash. We need to dust off old hurts that are still simmering in the dark recesses of our hearts as those will affect our spiritual life and our church life. We need to check the windows of our soul to make sure that they aren’t clouded with prejudices or pride. These and so many more deceitful desires creep into our lives and cause us to live more like the world than our new life.
The reason we need to do this evaluation with the Holy Spirit’s guidance is because our heart can deceive us. Let’s close out today meditating and praying Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Making It Personal
So how would God grade your commitment to Him? Are there things God is pointing out that He wants out of your life? What are you going to do about what He has pointed out?
Making It Personal Kids
What kinds of things does Jesus not want in our lives? Should we stop doing those things? What should we do instead?
Father, we come to You humbled by the things that have been lurking in the deep recesses of our hearts. Father, give us the strength to stop these things so that we can be living our new life in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
