Verse 3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve God by his Spirit, who boast in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh—
We know we aren’t to be boasting in ourselves but that is difficult when it is so easy to trust our own abilities. And how are we supposed to work out our salvation but not put our confidence in our own works?
Working out our salvation is not so much about the doing as it is about the being. We are to be living for God and that means doing as He desires but it doesn’t mean that we are doing it all on our own. When we start thinking that obedience is all about our obeying we begin to put our confidence in our own efforts and that takes away from what Christ did on the cross.
When we discussed the topic of working out our salvation a few weeks ago we said it was like a dance. This dance is displayed first by His leading. If He didn’t lead we wouldn’t know how to follow and without knowing how to follow we would miss the pleasure of the dance. We shouldn’t look at this following His lead as drudgery but as a joy of working out a thing of beauty with Him.
With each turn and twist in life we will find that when we put our confidence in Him and His leading we will safely flow in His way. We won’t be bumping into everything and anything that comes our way because we will know how to handle it by the way He guides us away from and through things. The thing that always causes issues in a dance is when the one who is supposed to be following tries to lead alongside the leader of the dance. This leads to collisions and sore feet.
When we try to do things on our own, in our own power, we tend to try to take credit for whatever it is that we do and when that is about our salvation it will never be enough. It doesn’t matter if we try to take the lead in our lives, we can never do enough to save ourselves. We can take no confidence in our own works because they aren’t what saves us. We need only what He has done. Our confidence has to be in what He has done. And we rejoice by following Him in this dance of obedience.
Making It Personal
Do you find yourself taking credit for things associated with your salvation? How do you see the dance between His leading work and your following obedience? Do you have something you need to follow Him in today?
Making It Personal Kids
Why is it important to remember that we can’t earn our way to heaven? Who is the only one who can pay our way? Does knowing that He paid the price make you want to obey?
Father, only You could pay the price that our sins deserve. We can’t thank You enough for that sacrifice. Give us the wisdom and guidance to obey You the way You deserve. In Jesus’ name, amen.
