Building Ourselves Up
Verse 20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
After all this discussion about false teachers Jude again turns to his original instruction for his readers, their need for solid faith. This is just as important for us to remember and so let’s talk some more about what that means.
Jude points out in our key verse for the day that we don’t get this faith without putting in any effort. He says that, “by building yourselves up,” which makes it pretty obvious that we are in charge of gaining deeper faith. But how can we do this? Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
We all know the importance of the Word of God to the Christian but how important does our consumption of it say it really is to us? Jude is making sure that his readers knew that they couldn’t be complacent about continuing to gain knowledge and understanding of the teaching of the Christ and the apostles. We need to be able to have the knowledge and understanding so that we can live as God desires us to live and so we could share that knowledge with each other and with those wondering about a relationship with God.
Next, Jude gives us another important fact, mediocre faith is not going to keep the believer firm in the face of false teachers. This requirement of holy faith isn’t Jude’s idea. Jude had actually had the privilege of having a front row seat to Jesus living out the most holy life. He saw, from his earliest days, what a holy life looked like. He had never had to doubt how Jesus would treat him while he may have had to make sure James didn’t get mad at him. Jude knew this takes work on the human’s part but that a holy life is something that will speak truth to everyone we encounter.
Jude’s point is that we shouldn’t be satisfied with a faith that isn’t growing. Jude finishes his list in today’s verse with the need for prayer but for time purposes we will talk about that tomorrow.
