Born to Serve

Philippians 2:5-11

Verse 7 …rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

Now that we have talked about what Jesus left to come to earth, let’s talk about the way He came.

Yesterday we mentioned that there are many beings in Heaven that do just as they were made to do. We have also talked about His being the creator of the earth. As God, Jesus, had full control to come to earth in any way He wanted.

He could have set up a country and rose to great military power before coming to Israel. He could have created an altogether new creature to come as, therefore setting Himself up for public notice. There are so many options that would have shown He was more powerful than others but that isn’t keeping with His nature.

His humble nature drove Him to do the thing that no one else would have thought to do. Nor would they have been able to do it. Only because He is God could He decide to come as a human baby, born in the natural way. He chose to come as the most helpless of His creation so that He could be one of us, minus the sinful nature.

This choice to become human was so that He could be a servant. What kind of love chooses to come to serve? What kind of love chooses to die so that others don’t have to? This is Jesus. Only Jesus could love to such a degree. Only Jesus could know our desperate need for a savior. He and the Father had set up this way of redeeming Their people since before the world began.

Jesus made the choice. He had everything, more than we can even begin to imagine, but His love for us caused Him to want to be the lowest form of us that He could be. And He didn’t stay as that helpless babe, He grew to be a man in the same way we grow to adulthood. One year at a time, one life lesson at a time.

Making It Personal

What does it mean to you that He came as a baby? Had you ever thought about what it was like for Jesus to grow as a human? Have you ever chosen the servant road of living?

Making It Personal Kids

Is it hard to think of Jesus being a boy? What do you think it would have been like to grow up with Jesus? How can you serve someone like Jesus did?

Closing Prayer

Father, it could have been so easy for You to come as a military power but You knew a better way. You came as an example for us to live lives as servants. Help us know how to serve You and others faithfully. In Jesus’ name, amen.
