Exodus 11:1-3

Verse 1  Now the Lord had said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt.  After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely.

Though each of the plagues show the magnitude of God in their own way, we aren’t going to spend a lot of time on each of them individually.  God was very specific on the various plagues He chose to put on Egypt.  In fact, He took great care using some of the plagues to discredit the false gods they served so faithfully.  They may have missed the significance the first time or two but by the end there was no denying that God of the Hebrews was the One True God.

While Pharaoh was not wanting the Israelites to go into the wilderness to worship, he couldn’t deny that God was more capable than his magicians who were trying to work the magic of his gods.  They couldn’t replicate every plague nor did the try to reverse them.  When God plagued the Egyptians with darkness so deep they couldn’t even see each other for three days, He caused the light to shine just as bright on the Israelites as normal.  Things were not business as usual for Egypt during the plagues.

It is understandable that Pharaoh didn’t trust that they would only be gone a few days and when he was depending on those very people to do all the work for his kingdom, he didn’t want them to go.  Their commerce had come to depend greatly on the descendants of Jacob.  The 400 years they had been there had seen them grow to a mighty number and the rulers over the years knew they had to be put in bondage or the Egyptians would be over run.

The truth was the Israelites wanted to be free from their slavery but felt stuck.  It had been 80 years since Moses had been pulled from the Nile.  Remember the Israelites had been so oppressed at that point that the midwives were told to kill any boy baby born.  Things must have only gotten worse over those 80 years.

We need to remember that the Egyptians weren’t the only ones witnessing God’s power as He poured out the plagues.  The Israelites were needing these glimpses of God’s power just as much if not more than their oppressors.  If they were truly going to follow Him where He led, they would need to know His capabilities.

Making It Personal

When have you been so focused on the hard times you were facing that you forgot how big God is?  When has God showed Himself in a large way to you?  How did you respond?

Making It Personal Kids

What are some big ways God has shown how mighty He is?  Have you ever been a witness to the big things He does?  How should you respond to Him doing something big?

Closing Prayer

Father, You are awesome and do more than we can even imagine.  Give us eyes to see Your work and hearts that worship You when we do see it.  In Jesus’ name, amen.
