Philippians 2:14-18

Verse 15 that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”

We talked yesterday about living the pure and blameless lives that we are supposed to as God’s children, but what does it mean to be one of His children?

There is a common belief in our world that everyone is a child of God, this is a false belief. While we are all created by God and in His image, we don’t have all have the privilege of calling Him Father. To be God’s children requires more than knowing Him or even believing that He is God. Even the enemy and his demons know that God is God but they aren’t His children.

One of the most popular verses in the world is John 3:16. In this verse we see that God has one Son that is His own. This could be discouraging if it weren’t for Paul’s reminder in Ephesians 1:5, “…He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will—…“ God decided to choose some people to be His children. He chose those that He found pleasure in and that fit His will for this world and the next.

While this doctrine of election can be hard to understand when we look at it with human eyes and hearts, it fits perfectly with His character and nature. He is a holy God, He desires a holy people. We mentioned a few days ago that Jesus said that God’s people are those who do His will. The important thing to remember is He didn’t choose to adopt us because of our doing His will. We don’t earn our salvation. There is no way we can earn it.

These children of God that Paul is talking about to his friends in Philippi are those who God has adopted to do His will. When we live in accordance to His teachings and reveal His purity and spotless nature through our thoughts and deeds, we show our love for Him and thankfulness of His adopting us to be His children.

Making It Personal

What do your thoughts and actions say about your feelings towards your being adopted? What does it mean to you to be a child of God? What can you do today to show Him your love and thankfulness?

Making It Personal Kids

What does it mean that God adopts us? Does being God’s child make you happy? What are some ways you can show Him that you love being His child?

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for choosing us. You chose us to be Your holy people and we need to live out what it means to be Your children. Teach us how to be holy like You are holy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
